P-12 Policy Analyst
Kayla is a policy analyst on the P-12 Policy team. She conducts data and policy analyses related to trends in opportunities and student outcomes with a focus on identifying and remedying disparities.
Prior to joining The Education Trust, Kayla worked at the National Women’s Law Center, where she conducted research and data analysis on critical issues that impact women and girls. While there, she led a team to produce a well-publicized report, Let Her Learn: Stopping School Pushout for Girls. She also co-authored a report with 20 Black girls in Washington D.C. that outlines the harmful effects of dress codes on girls’ learning outcomes.
A native of the Bay Area, Kayla holds a master’s degree from Teacher’s College, Columbia University in education policy, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Wellesley College.

What are people most surprised to learn about you?
People are always surprised to learn that I have five siblings, a nephew who is eight months younger than me, and that I watch entirely too much reality TV.
What drew you to education?
My parents made huge sacrifices so that I could have access to a quality education. While I am grateful, access to a quality education shouldn’t be a privilege. At an early age, I could identify huge differences between my experience and the experience of friends and family members who attended different schools. My parents’ sacrifices and those differences made two things very clear to me: 1) education can be a pathway to freedom for children who look like me; 2) low-income students and students of color are systematically locked out of educational opportunities.
