Gingle studies barriers to access and success in higher education that affect low-income and underrepresented minority students. One particular project compares graduation rates of Pell recipients to those of non-Pell students and other demographic groups at four-year institutions across the country, with the goal of identifying institutions and practices that facilitate completion for low-income students.
Prior to joining The Education Trust, Gingle worked as an analyst in institutional research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, managing the engineering accreditation process and serving as primary researcher for a study of campus research outcomes. She has also worked in program evaluation at the Harvard Bureau of Study Counsel, student retention at Northeastern University, and as a writing tutor throughout her college years. Before her career in higher education, she worked as an editor for medical and scientific publications.
Gingle holds a master’s degree in higher education from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in English literature and creative writing from Agnes Scott College.

What drew you to education?
My personal background informs my passion for studying barriers to access and success in higher education, but my experience as a writing tutor in college inspired me to work in the field. Tutoring taught me to identify student needs and to understand the importance of support services as requisites for success, particularly for traditionally underserved students. I gradually became interested in an approach to addressing student success in higher education in which thorough research methods facilitate greater understanding of student needs and the use of effective tools for success.
